What is IDN?

IDN stands for "Internationalized Domain Name" and is a standardisation for domain names which, in addition to the 26 characters of the Latin alphabet previously permitted, the digits from 0-9 and a hyphen, now also permitted umlauts and diacritical characters.

Many email and FTP programmes still have problems with domains with umlauts (IDN spelling). To solve such problems, you can use the ACE notation. For the domain täst.at, the ACE spelling would be e.g. xn--tst-qla.at.
